Ruger M77 .458 Socom
« on: January 11, 2011, 08:39:54 AM »

My Ruger bolt gun. It started life as a .308 with a split barrel. The guy who owned it bought it, bore sighted it and went hunting. On the way into the stand he stuck the muzzle in the dirt. He shot at a doe from the stand and split the barrel almost to the chamber. The rifle literally only had 1 round thru it when I got it. I turned the barrel from a 1.25" blank. 1 in 14 twist and 16" long. It shoots very well with the 300 gr JHP. The other 8" of barrel from the blank went into this one.

I'm diggin' on that Ruger bolt gun. How many rounds does it hold, and did you have to alter the feed rails or any other mods besides the barrel?

Very nice!  Did you check for, or find, any distortion in the bolt lugs after the original barrel-splitting event?

It holds 3 rds. No mods were necessary. Bolt lugs were fine. The barrel started to split about 1/2 inch from the muzzle and it was a lightweight pencil barrel.
